Bunions

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a common foot condition characterised by the misalignment of the big toe joint. It manifests as a bony protrusion on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe. Bunions can be painful and may cause discomfort when walking or wearing shoes. They often develop gradually over time and can affect one or both feet.

Symptoms of a Bunion:

  1. Visible bump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe.
  2. Pain or soreness around the affected area.
  3. Swelling and inflammation of the joint.
  4. Restricted movement of the big toe.
  5. Corns or calluses may develop on the bump or between the toes.

How Can Podiatrists Help?

At The Foot Room, our experienced podiatrists specialise in diagnosing and managing bunions. We offer comprehensive treatment options to relieve pain, potentially slow the progression of the condition, and improve your foot function.

Treatment options for bunions

  1.  Footwear recommendations: Our podiatrists can provide guidance on proper shoe selection, including recommending shoes with a wide toe box and good arch support. They may also suggest padding or orthotic devices to alleviate pressure on the bunion.
  2. Pain management: Various non-surgical methods, such as ice therapy, over-the-counter pain medications, strapping and bunion splints or cushions, can help alleviate pain and inflammation associated with bunions.
  3. Custom orthotics: If faulty foot mechanics contribute to the bunion, our podiatrists may recommend a Biomechanical Treatment Pathway, where we may prescribe custom orthotic devices. These inserts are designed to provide support, correct imbalances, and relieve pressure on the affected area.
  4. Stretching and strengthening exercises: Specific exercises can help improve foot strength, flexibility, and alignment, which may provide relief and prevent further bunion progression.
  5. Surgical options: In cases where conservative treatments do not provide sufficient relief, surgical intervention may be considered. Our podiatrists can discuss referring to a Podiatric surgeon to discuss options further.
