Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disease that affects the cartilage, a protective tissue that cushions the ends of bones within a joint. It is often referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis since it occurs when the cartilage gradually deteriorates over time. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in the body, but it most commonly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine, as well as the hands and fingers.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis:

  1. Joint pain
  2. Stiffness
  3. Swelling and inflammation
  4. Reduced range of motion
  5. Joint instability

How Can Podiatrists Help?

At The Foot Room, our skilled podiatrists specialise in managing osteoarthritis and providing personalised treatment options to improve joint function and reduce pain. We offer comprehensive care to address the specific needs of each patient.

Treatment options for osteoarthritis may include:

  1. Pain management: Our podiatrists can refer to other professionals who can offer pain relief strategies such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), topical creams, or joint injections to alleviate discomfort.
  2. Orthotic devices: Custom orthotics, such as shoe inserts or strapping, can help redistribute pressure on the affected joint, provide support, and improve foot and ankle alignment.
  3. Footwear recommendations: Our podiatrists can advise on proper footwear with cushioning, shock absorption, and stability features to reduce joint stress.
  4. Physical therapy: Targeted exercises and stretching prescribed by our podiatrists or a physical therapist can strengthen the muscles around the affected joint, improve flexibility, and enhance joint stability.
  5. Assistive devices: In some cases, assistive devices like canes or walking aids may be recommended to alleviate joint pressure and improve mobility.
  6. Lifestyle modifications: Our team can recommend other specialists who can help with weight management/ nutrition, activity modifications, mental health challenges associated with pain and lifestyle changes and techniques to protect the joints during daily activities. We work closely with Archana Patel – Health, Nutrition and Alcohol-reduction Coach, Joshua Reilly – a fitness, biomechanical and strengthening coach, Steve Watt – A counsellor/therapist and various specialist physiotherapists and allied health professionals, who are all experts in helping you maintain an active lifestyle.
