Wart happens: why we’re taking verrucas seriously at The Foot Room

Let’s be honest – verrucas don’t get much love. They’re not glamorous, not Instagrammable, and definitely not the sort of thing people enjoy talking about. But here at The Foot Room, we do talk about them. A lot.

Why? Verrucas are surprisingly common, frustratingly persistent, and can seriously affect your confidence, comfort, and even mobility, especially for active kids and sporty adults. So this month, we’re taking you behind the scenes into our latest team development focus on verruca management.

We’ve gone deep on verrucas… so you don’t have to

Recently, our full clinical team came together for a dedicated continuing professional development (CPD) session on verrucas. We dug into the science, explored new techniques, reviewed our past outcomes, and asked ourselves: Are we doing the best we can for our patients?

We always aim higher. So we’re currently running an in-house audit of all our verruca treatments to see what’s really working, across all age groups and appointment types. We want hard data and honest insights, not guesswork.

Because when we say we’re committed to better outcomes, we mean it.

Verruca 101: What are they, and why won’t they go away?

Let’s get back to basics. A verruca (also called a plantar wart) is a small, rough growth that appears on the sole of the foot. Caused by the HPV virus, verrucas thrive in warm, damp places (think swimming pools and shared showers) and can spread easily, especially in children and teens.

Typical signs include:

  • Pain when walking or standing
  • A rough, cauliflower-like surface
  • Tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels)
  • Single or clustered growths (mosaic verrucas)

They can hang around for months – or even years – without effective treatment. And while over-the-counter options are often the first port of call, they don’t always deliver results. That’s where we come in.

What treatments actually work?

At The Foot Room, we offer a range of evidence-based verruca treatments, chosen for their results. Each option is tailored to the individual patient based on age, medical history, and severity.

Swift microwave therapy
A non-invasive treatment that uses microwave energy to gently heat the verruca and stimulate your immune system to recognise and fight the virus. It’s quick, clean, and highly effective for adults and older children.

Salicylic acid application
This is a well-established and effective method, particularly for younger patients. Applied by our podiatrists, salicylic acid helps soften and gradually remove the infected skin while encouraging your immune system to respond. We often combine this with debridement for best results.

Falknor’s needling technique
A minimally invasive option for stubborn verrucas. After numbing the area, we use a fine needle to push verruca tissue deeper into the skin, triggering an immune response. Often, only one treatment is needed.

Monitoring and gentle support
Sometimes, especially for children, the best option is to monitor and guide rather than treat immediately. If a verruca isn’t painful or spreading, we may recommend a “watch and wait” approach with professional advice along the way.

We’re especially good with kids (and nervous adults)

Verrucas can be a sensitive issue, especially for self-conscious teens or anxious younger children. That’s why we offer specialist children’s appointments with podiatrists who know how to make patients feel calm, understood, and in control.

We don’t rush. We explain everything in clear, age-appropriate ways. And we always aim to build trust before treatment begins.

Why choose The Foot Room?
