At The Foot Room, we are committed to providing the latest evidence-based treatments to help our patients recover from pain, return to activity, and perform at their best.
Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. It can be highly effective for a range of persistent injuries affecting the foot, ankle, leg, knee, thigh, hip and pelvis.
Shockwave Therapy is available as an additional treatment option within our Biomechanical Pathway, allowing us to combine advanced technology with a comprehensive assessment and rehabilitation programme designed specifically for you.
Shockwave Therapy delivers high-energy sound waves into injured tissues. These acoustic waves help stimulate healing in areas where recovery has slowed or stalled.
The treatment encourages:
Unlike injections or surgery, Shockwave Therapy is completely non-invasive and requires minimal downtime, allowing most patients to continue with their normal activities.
Shockwave Therapy can be beneficial for a wide variety of lower limb conditions, particularly long-standing injuries involving tendons, ligaments, muscles and soft tissues.
Common conditions include:
This is not an exhaustive list. As lower limb specialists, we assess everything from the foot to the pelvis. If you are experiencing ongoing pain, injury, stiffness or reduced performance anywhere in the lower limb, Shockwave Therapy may form part of your treatment plan.
Many clinics offer Shockwave Therapy as a standalone treatment. At The Foot Room, we believe the best outcomes come from understanding why an injury has occurred in the first place.
Pain is often the result of underlying biomechanical factors such as muscle weakness, reduced flexibility, poor movement patterns, training errors, footwear choices, joint restrictions or changes in gait.
Our Biomechanical Pathway is designed to identify these contributing factors and address them alongside the painful area.
Your treatment plan may include:
By treating both the cause and the symptoms, we aim to achieve long-term results rather than short-term relief.
Shockwave Therapy sessions are quick and straightforward, typically lasting between 15 and 20 minutes.
Following your assessment, a gel is applied to the treatment area and the shockwave device delivers a series of acoustic pulses into the affected tissue.
Some patients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, particularly around more sensitive areas, but the intensity can be adjusted throughout the session to ensure it remains tolerable.
Most patients require a course of treatment, often alongside a structured rehabilitation programme, to achieve the best results.
Shockwave Therapy is not suitable for every condition, which is why a full assessment is essential.
Our experienced podiatrists will assess your symptoms, movement patterns, activity levels and biomechanics before determining whether Shockwave Therapy is likely to benefit you.
If you have been struggling with persistent foot, ankle, leg, knee or hip pain, or a sports injury that simply isn’t improving, we may be able to help.
