Most athletes will happily discuss muscle strains, ligament injuries, and recovery plans.
Very few want to talk about their toenails. But perhaps they should. At The Foot Room, ingrown toenails are one of the most common conditions we treat in athletes, and one of the most overlooked.
The reality is simple:
An ingrown toenail can have a huge impact on performance.
What Is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail presses into or pierces the surrounding skin.
This can cause:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Redness
- Infection
- Difficulty wearing footwear
For athletes wearing tight-fitting boots, trainers, cycling shoes or specialist sporting footwear, the problem can escalate quickly.
Why Athletes Get Them
Sport creates the perfect environment for ingrown toenails.
Common contributing factors include:
- Repetitive trauma
- Tight footwear
- Sudden stopping and turning
- Sprinting
- Poor nail-cutting technique
- Natural nail shape
Sports such as football, rugby, running, cycling, tennis, and hockey commonly create the conditions where ingrown nails develop.
Why Athletes Ignore Them
Many athletes try to push through. After all, it’s “just a toenail.” Unfortunately, what begins as a minor irritation can quickly become:
- Painful infection
- Difficulty training
- Altered movement patterns
- Reduced performance
- Time away from sport
We’ve seen athletes delay treatment for months before finally seeking help when they can no longer perform comfortably.
Early Treatment Matters
The earlier an ingrown toenail is addressed, the easier treatment often becomes.
Depending on the severity, treatment may involve:
- Conservative nail care
- Infection management
- Footwear advice
- Nail surgery
Nail Surgery Isn’t Something to Fear
Many athletes are surprised by how straightforward nail surgery can be. At The Foot Room, we perform nail surgery regularly and understand the importance of helping athletes return to activity safely. For some patients, it provides a long-term solution to a recurring problem.
Don’t Let a Toenail Dictate Your Performance
Elite sport is demanding enough without avoidable pain. If your toenail is affecting training, comfort, or confidence, don’t ignore it, because sometimes the smallest injury becomes the biggest distraction.
