Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis – What Parents Need to Know

Children’s feet are always on the move — running, playing, and growing fast. But sometimes, painful skin conditions can appear that leave parents unsure of what’s going on. One of the lesser-known conditions we see in children is Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis.

It can be worrying to watch your child limp, avoid shoes, or complain of sore feet. Here’s what every parent needs to know.

What is Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis?

Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis (often called “JPD”) is a skin condition that usually affects children between the ages of 3 and 14. It causes red, shiny, sore patches of skin on the balls of the feet — sometimes with cracks or splits that can be painful when walking.

It tends to be more common in boys and is often seen in children who are very active or who spend a lot of time in trainers.

What Causes Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis?

The exact cause isn’t always clear, but a few common factors contribute:

  • Friction and sweating: Feet in warm, sweaty shoes can become irritated.
  • Skin sensitivity: Some children’s skin is more prone to dryness and cracking.
  • Growth and activity: Busy, active kids put more stress on their feet.

It’s not an infection, so it isn’t contagious — but it does need careful management.

Symptoms Parents Should Look Out For

  • Red, shiny, glazed-looking skin on the balls of the feet.
  • Painful cracks or splits in the skin.
  • Soreness when wearing shoes or running.
  • Symptoms often worse in warm weather or after lots of activity.

What Can Help?

If you suspect your child has Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis, don’t panic. The condition usually improves as children get older, but in the meantime, the right care makes a big difference:

  • Footwear: Choose breathable shoes and socks to reduce sweating.
  • Moisturising: Regularly applying child-safe emollients can help prevent dryness.
  • Activity breaks: Encourage shoe-free time at home to let the feet breathe.
  • Professional support: A podiatrist can give tailored advice, check for other causes of pain, and recommend the best treatment plan.
