Footwear Mistakes That Could Be Hurting You

We’ve all been guilty of it — choosing shoes because they look good rather than because they feel good. But what many people don’t realise is that the wrong footwear can do more than just give you sore feet. Over time, poor shoe choices can lead to knee pain, hip stiffness, and even back problems.

At The Foot Room, we see the impact of footwear every day in our clinics. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make — and how to avoid them.

  1. Shoes That Are Too Tight

Squeezing into shoes that don’t fit properly can cause blisters, corns, callus build-up, and even ingrowing toenails. Over time, tight shoes can change the way you walk, leading to aches higher up your body.

Fix it: Always try the shoes on before you buy; each shoe measures differently; remember that foot size can change over time (yes, even in adults!).

  1. No Support for Your Arches

Flat, unsupportive shoes — like ballet pumps or fashion trainers — may feel light and easy, but they don’t give your feet the support they need. Without proper support, your arches collapse inward, which can put pressure on your knees, hips, and back.

Fix it: Choose shoes with cushioning and arch support. If in doubt, a podiatrist can check if you’d benefit from custom orthotics.

  1. High Heels Too Often

Heels may give you height, but they also push your weight forward, straining your toes, calves, and lower back. Worn too often, they can cause lasting posture changes and pain.

Fix it: Save heels for occasional wear, and opt for lower, block styles if you wear them regularly.

  1. Worn-Out Trainers

Even the best trainers lose their support after too many miles. If you’ve had yours for years, they may no longer absorb shock properly — which means your joints are taking the impact instead.

Fix it: Replace trainers every 300–500 miles of use (or sooner if they look worn down).

  1. Style Over Function

Shoes that are designed for fashion rather than foot health often ignore the basics: space for your toes, proper cushioning, and stable soles. They might look great — but at a cost to your long-term comfort.

Fix it: Balance style with function. Plenty of brands now make shoes that are both supportive and stylish.

How The Foot Room Can Help

If you’ve been struggling with recurring pain in your feet, knees, hips, or back, it could be linked to your footwear. At The Foot Room, our podiatrists can assess how your shoes affect your posture and walking pattern.

We offer:

  • Biomechanical pathways (at our Broughton clinic) to check how your feet move.
  • Children’s and adult podiatry appointments at both Longridge (just off Berry Lane) and Broughton (A6, Garstang Road).
  • Orthotic advice to keep you moving comfortably.

The Takeaway

The wrong shoes can cause more than just sore feet — they can affect your whole body. A few simple changes in footwear can make a huge difference to your comfort, posture, and long-term health.

If you’re not sure whether your shoes are helping or harming, book an appointment at The Foot Room today.
