Why Do Feet and Shoes Smell?

With summer fast approaching, the thought of hot weather, flip-flops, garden parties, and barefoot moments can bring a wave of excitement—but for many, it also brings a wave of anxiety.

If the idea of taking your shoes off at a friend’s house, or the fear of your feet being a bit pongy in flip-flops makes you cringe, you’re not alone. Smelly feet (also known as bromodosis) are a common concern—and yes, they’re completely treatable.

Here at The Foot Room, we want you to step into summer with confidence, not embarrassment. The good news is, smelly feet don’t have to be part of your summer story—but it’s important to act now, before the heat really kicks in.

Your feet have more sweat glands than anywhere else on your body—over 250,000! When the weather warms up, these glands go into overdrive, especially when feet are trapped in socks and shoes. Sweat itself is odourless, but when it’s left to linger, bacteria feed on it and release those tell-tale unpleasant smells.

Common causes of foot odour include

  • Sweat (warm, moist environments encourage bacterial growth)
  • Improper footwear (non-breathable shoes trap heat, sweat, and odour)
  • Poor hygiene (infrequent washing allows bacteria to thrive and multiply).

Don’t leave it until you’re melting in your sandals—start now and enjoy fresh feet all summer long.

  • Wash your feet daily with soap and water, paying special attention between your toes, and dry them thoroughly.
  • Choose breathable materials like bamboo, wool, and leather for your socks and shoes.
  • Rotate your footwear—don’t wear the same pair two days in a row, let them dry out fully.
  • Use antibacterial sprays or powders to keep bacteria at bay and shoes smelling fresh. Ask our team for their recommendation.

At The Foot Room, smelly feet are nothing to be embarrassed about—we literally see (and smell!) them every day. Our compassionate team of podiatrists are experts at treating foot odour and the many causes behind it, from fungal infections to excessive sweating.

We know it can feel uncomfortable to talk about, but we promise you—we’re not here to judge. We’re here to help. Our podiatrists are kind, caring, and brilliant at making you feel relaxed and listened to. Whether you’re worried about foot odour, sweaty soles, or any other foot issue, we’ll help you find the right solution so you can feel confident all summer long.

With the warmer weather just around the corner, our diaries are getting busier. If you’re dreading the thought of sandal season, book your appointment now.

Let us take care of the problem before it gets worse—because summer should be about freedom, not foot worries. Step into summer with fresh feet and confidence—with help from The Foot Room.
