Many runners have experienced it. You walk into a running shop. You run on a treadmill for a few seconds. Someone watches your feet. A shoe recommendation follows. While this can be useful for selecting footwear, it’s important to understand one thing:
This is not the same as a Podiatric Biomechanical Assessment.
What Running Shop Gait Analysis Does Well
Running shops play an important role. They help runners choose appropriate footwear and often provide valuable advice on shoe fit and comfort. For many runners, this is a great starting point, but it isn’t a clinical assessment.
What Running Shop Analysis Doesn’t Tell You
A short treadmill video cannot assess:
- Joint mobility
- Muscle strength
- Previous injury history
- Foot posture
- Tissue loading
- Lower limb biomechanics
- Balance and stability
- Running-related injury risk
These are often the factors responsible for recurring injuries.
Why Athletes Need More
Serious athletes need more than shoe recommendations. They need answers.
- Why does the injury keep coming back?
- Why does one knee hurt after every run?
- Why does one calf tighten repeatedly?
- Why does heel pain return every training block?
These questions require a clinical assessment.
What We Do Differently
At The Foot Room, our Biomechanical Pathway combines:
- Clinical examination
- PodoSmart gait analysis
- Video treadmill analysis
- Strength testing
- Movement screening
- Injury history review
This allows us to understand not only how you move but why you move that way.
The Role of PodoSmart
One of the most exciting developments in modern sports podiatry is PodoSmart technology. Unlike simple video observation, PodoSmart provides objective data about:
- Cadence
- Symmetry
- Loading
- Movement patterns
This gives us information that cannot be obtained simply by watching someone run.
It’s Not About the Shoes
Sometimes athletes arrive expecting a new pair of trainers to solve everything. Occasionally that helps. More often, the solution involves understanding the body wearing the shoes.
That’s where biomechanics becomes invaluable.
Serious Athletes Deserve Serious Analysis
Running shop gait analysis can be useful for choosing footwear. But if you’re injured, repeatedly breaking down, or looking to optimise performance, you need a deeper understanding of your movement. That’s where our Biomechanical Pathway comes in, because when performance matters, guesswork isn’t enough.
