The Serious Athlete Series: Verrucas and Sport – Why They Matter More Than You Think

When athletes think about performance, they often focus on training programmes, nutrition, strength work, recovery, and equipment. Very few spend time thinking about verrucas. Until they get one.

At first, a verruca may seem like a minor inconvenience. A small lesion on the sole of the foot that doesn’t appear to cause much trouble. However, for athletes, even small foot problems can have a surprisingly large impact on performance, comfort, and movement.

At The Foot Room, we regularly treat athletes ranging from grassroots competitors to semi-professional and professional sportspeople and verrucas are often one of the most underestimated conditions we see.

What Is a Verruca?

A verruca is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and develops on the feet. Unlike warts elsewhere on the body, verrucas are often pushed inwards by the pressure of standing, walking, running, and jumping.

They may appear as:

  • Rough patches of skin
  • Areas surrounded by hard skin
  • Small black dots within the lesion
  • Painful lesions when squeezed or loaded

Some cause no discomfort at all, while others can become extremely painful.

Why Athletes Are More Vulnerable

Athletes often spend time in environments where the virus can spread more easily, including:

  • Changing rooms
  • Swimming pools
  • Communal showers
  • Gym facilities
  • Shared sporting environments

Combine this with sweating, repetitive loading, and occasional skin trauma, and it becomes easier for the virus to gain entry.

The Hidden Impact on Performance

Many athletes assume a verruca is simply a skin issue. In reality, it can influence movement. When a verruca becomes painful, athletes often unconsciously change how they load their foot. This altered movement pattern can affect:

  • Running mechanics
  • Balance
  • Jumping ability
  • Sprinting performance
  • Force production

Over time, compensation patterns can develop, placing additional strain on other areas of the body.

Why Ignoring It Isn’t Always the Best Strategy

Whilst some verrucas resolve naturally, others persist for months or even years. The longer a painful verruca affects movement, the greater the potential impact on training consistency and performance. For athletes preparing for competition, managing the issue early often makes far more sense than waiting for it to become problematic.

Treatment Options at The Foot Room

We offer a range of verruca treatments including:

  • Swift microwave therapy
  • Verruca needling
  • Debridement and pressure reduction
  • Individual treatment planning

Not every verruca requires treatment, but every athlete deserves to understand their options.

Performance Starts with Healthy Feet

Elite athletes pay attention to the details. Sometimes those details are the difference between performing at your best and constantly battling discomfort. Verrucas may seem small, but for serious athletes, they can become a surprisingly significant barrier.

The way we assess movement is evolving. For years, gait analysis relied heavily on observation. Clinicians would watch athletes walk or run and use experience to identify potential issues. Whilst experience remains incredibly important, technology is now helping us and the patient understand movement in ways that were previously impossible. At The Foot Room, one […]

The Serious Athlete Series: Recovery vs Rest – Why They’re Not the Same Thing

Athletes are often told to “rest.” It’s one of the most common pieces of advice given after an injury, but here’s the problem: rest and recovery are not the same thing. At The Foot Room, we regularly see athletes who have stopped training for weeks, only to discover that their pain returns the moment they […]

The Serious Athlete Series: The Running Shop Gait Analysis Myth

Many runners have experienced it. You walk into a running shop. You run on a treadmill for a few seconds. Someone watches your feet. A shoe recommendation follows. While this can be useful for selecting footwear, it’s important to understand one thing: This is not the same as a Podiatric Biomechanical Assessment. What Running Shop […]
