Exploring my new EMDR Therapy service: What you need to know

Hi, my name’s Steve, The Foot Room’s resident therapist. Welcome to the blog! Today, I’m excited to share some news with you: I’m now offering EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy at The Foot Room. If you’ve been curious about EMDR or wondering if it might be the right fit for you, this post is for you. Let’s dive into what EMDR is, how it works, and what you can expect from this transformative therapy.

So, What Exactly Is EMDR?

EMDR is a unique form of psychotherapy that’s designed to help people heal from the emotional distress that often accompanies trauma. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to go into detail about your distressing experiences. Instead, it focuses on helping your brain reprocess those memories in a way that reduces their emotional charge.

Sounds intriguing, right? The idea is that traumatic experiences can get “stuck” in the brain, making them hard to process and let go of. EMDR helps to “unstick” these memories by using bilateral stimulation—typically, eye movements, taps, or sounds—to engage both sides of your brain. This process helps to integrate the traumatic memories into your overall life story, so they don’t feel as overwhelming.

How Does EMDR Work?

During an EMDR session, I’ll work with you to identify a specific memory or issue that’s causing you distress. Then, while you focus on that memory, I’ll guide you through a series of eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This might sound a bit unusual, but research shows that it can be incredibly effective.

The goal here is to help your brain process the traumatic memory in a way that makes it feel less intense. Over time, the memory should lose its emotional charge, meaning you’ll be able to think about it without feeling overwhelmed or triggered.

What Can You Expect from EMDR Therapy?

If you’re considering EMDR, you might be wondering what the sessions will be like. First, it’s important to know that EMDR is a structured therapy. It follows a specific eight-phase protocol that I will guide you through. These phases include history-taking, preparation, assessment, and the reprocessing itself, among others.

Here’s a brief overview of what a typical session might look like:

  1. Preparation: I’ll help you develop coping strategies to manage any distressing emotions that might come up during the process. This could include relaxation techniques or visualisation exercises.
  2. Reprocessing: This is the core of EMDR. While focusing on a traumatic memory, you’ll engage in the bilateral stimulation. I’ll check in with you regularly to ensure you’re comfortable and processing the memory effectively.
  3. Closure: At the end of each session, I will help you return to a state of calm. We’ll also discuss any insights or changes you noticed during the session.
  4. Evaluation: In the following sessions, you’ll evaluate the progress you’ve made and decide on the next steps.

EMDR is particularly effective for individuals dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related issues. However, it’s also being used more broadly to help with things like phobias.
